If you run an online business, a sales funnel is one of your most important marketing tools. However, many entrepreneurs—both newbies and seasoned pros—often don’t fully understand what a funnel is or how it works.
Without a clear grasp of this key part of your business, you might see fewer sales, lower profits, and an overall shaky business. So let’s break it down!
At its most basic, a sales funnel starts with free content that doesn’t ask for much from your readers. This can be blog posts, YouTube videos, Facebook content, or any other info your audience can access for free. This is the “top” of your funnel.
Next, you introduce an enticing offer that requires a small “payment” like an email address. You’ve seen these offers all over the internet and probably signed up for some yourself. This could be a free ebook, guide, video series, checklist, workbook, or other valuable content that people get in exchange for joining your email list.
Once people are on your mailing list, you present them with low-cost offers. Maybe it’s a budget-friendly ebook or a trial membership.
Those who buy your low-priced products move further down the funnel and get introduced to higher-priced products. As they continue to buy, they get closer to your top-end offers, which are at the bottom of your funnel.
Picture a funnel (like the kind you’d use in the kitchen). Your free content—at the wide top—is seen by the largest number of people. Below that, your super low-cost offer (which just needs an email) attracts a smaller group. Next, your low-priced products draw in an even smaller crowd.
Finally, as you get closer to the narrow tip of the funnel, only your most loyal fans and customers will buy your highest-priced offers.
Your job, as the business owner, is to guide buyers naturally from the free offers at the top all the way to the premium offers at the bottom. The more people you keep in your funnel, the more money you’ll make.
Many new—and even experienced—business owners can easily picture the top of the funnel. But if you really want your business to grow, you need to understand the entire process. That starts with knowing what a funnel is and how it works.
Understanding and optimizing is crucial for the growth of your online business. By guiding your audience from free content to your highest-priced offers, you can maximize your sales and create a stable, profitable business. Remember, it’s all about nurturing your leads every step of the way and turning casual visitors into loyal customers.
